Nature of the event
Mississippi State University (MSU) is one of the most popular universities among the students in Sri Lanka who willing to join for higher studies in USA. Hence every year new Sri Lankan students join MSU family and Sri Lankan Association (SLA) organizes an annual event to welcome the new Sri Lankan students. This year, there are 6 new students have joined MSU for their graduate studies in different fields including Chemistry, Statistics, Forestry and Physics. This event consists of different cultural displays such as traditional dancing, songs and instrumental activities. We include such items to the event not only to make the event colourful, but also to share the traditional custom and cultural values of Sri Lanka with others.
All invitees are served with authentic Sri Lankan food buffet and beverages.
SLA has been organizing this event for the last 9 years in MSU and Holmes Cultural Diversity Center (HCDC) made great contribution for this event as a main sponsor for the last several years.
Activities in the event:
Welcome to MSU “Cultural Night” will be decorated with different activities. The event will be started with a traditional drum fusion consists with a group of drummers. A traditional oil lamp will be lit by the distinguish guests to mark the commencement of the event. All invitees will be warmly welcome to the event by a traditional “Kandyan” dance which is a unique custom in Sri Lanka. There will be 2 songs sung in English and Sinhalese (Sri Lankan language). Traditional group dance will be performed by Sri Lankan students. All these activities will be conducted by the current and new Sri Lankan students of MSU. The invitees will be served with traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and beverages. This event also consists with balloon dance and musical chair games in order to make the invitees to participate and enjoy themselves.
Sri Lankan students who graduated from MSU in the past year will also be recognized for their achievements at the same event.
